On December 11, 2020, Kid Cudi released “Man On The Moon III: The Chosen,” the concluding volume of his celestial trilogy, ten years after the publication of his initial album, “Man On The Moon: The End Of Day.” It was well worth the wait. How “Mr. Solo Dolo Iii”
Similar to how “Mr. Solo Dolo III” draws listeners into the deepest recesses of Cudi’s psyche, it is a gloomy and dismal portrayal of the solitude that comes with addiction.
Although the album shares a theme with his earlier works, Cudi skillfully tries out fresh sounds in a number of the songs. The rapper demonstrates he can smoothly make his way into any genre, which is a tribute to his flexibility. From mixing rap with indie on “Loving Me,” starring Phoebe Bridgers, to pairing his signature humming melodies with a drill-infused trap rhythm on “Show Out,” featuring Pop Smoke and Skepta. Cudi’s experimentation continues with “Elsie’s Baby Boy (flashback),” a song that describes adolescent and familial anguish. While still textbook Kid Cudi, “Man On The Moon III: The Chosen” is elevated by “The Void,” “Tequila Shots,” and “Sad People” in a way that reveals his artistic development.
The album’s final track, “Lord I Know,” demonstrates Cudi’s achievement in overcoming his problems and achieving inner peace. Although Cudi hinted that the “Man On The Moon” series was a trilogy, the album’s closing track features his daughter Vada, who murmurs, “To be continued…” after the way, suggesting that Cudi’s trilogy may not be complete after all.
